How To Select Dog Clothing

How to Select Dog Clothing

Saltsox® Insulated Boots Set of 4
All-Weather 3-in-1 Jacket

How to choose the right clothing for your dog? Like people, dogs wear clothes for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost is weather protection. While it's true that dogs have natural coats of their own, most breeds need and appreciate an extra layer of protection in cold or wet conditions. Dogs also benefit from wearing protective footwear that shields their sensitive paws. And sometimes, a dog just wants to dress up and get compliments!

Our ever-changing dog apparel collection includes choices for dogs of all sizes, shapes and breeds, from chic couture for canine fashionistas to world-class utilitarian gear for rugged, no-nonsense types.

What to look for when outfitting your dog:

  • Style

Sweaters

A winter wardrobe essential, dog sweaters provide cozy warmth and comfort when the temperature dips. Smaller dogs and short-haired breeds, as well as older, ailing or arthritic dogs who need extra help staying warm, will especially benefit from the extra layer of insulation. Choose from charming wool handknits, soft acrylic pullovers, cuddly fleece hoodies and lots more.

Outerwear

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stops a dog and his walker from their appointed rounds! Well-designed, protective dog outerwear allows your dog to take on the elements in comfort and style, without missing a minute of fun. Look for waterproof rain slickers, puffy down parkas, reversible jackets and more, many with high-visibility reflective trim for added safety in low-light conditions.

Footwear

Protect your dog's precious paws from mud, snow, ice, fire ants, slippery surfaces and other rigors of daily life. Road salts, hazardous chemicals and pesticides can burn tender skin, and are toxic if your dog licks his paws. Weatherproof boots provide traction in wintry conditions while keeping your dog's feet warm and dry. Urban walkers shield paws from the heat and debris of city sidewalks. Illuminated, all-terrain running shoes help dogs be seen on walks or runs. Traction socks assist senior dogs and those with mobility issues in getting a grip on hardwood or tile floors. And wraparound booties protect injured paws while healing.

Accessories

From hats to bow ties to embellished tees to festive vests, our irresistible fashion accents will help your dog steal the scene at any gathering. At holiday time, make sure your pet is included in the fun with one of our super-cute, dogs-friendly costumes that shout "photo op" while emphasizing comfort and ease.

Size & Fit

Before ordering apparel, it's important to measure your dog to ensure the best fit. Aim for a fit that's snug enough that your dog can't pull it off, yet not too tight. Knowing your dog's weight is also helpful in choosing the perfect size.

Girth: Measure the circumference of your dog behind the front legs, at the deepest part. If your dog is at the upper limit of a size range, we recommend going up one size.

Back Length: Measure from the collar to the base of the tail. If your dog has a thick coat or deep chest, or is overweight, we recommend going up one size for a proper fit.

A soft fabric measuring tape is the best choice for taking quick and easy measurements, or you can substitute a length of string which can be measured against a yardstick.
